Concern for cuckoo bumblebees (Bombus subgenus Psithyrus): addressing our lack of knowledge

چکیده

Abstract Bumblebees (genus Bombus ) have received increased academic and conservation attention with the recognition of a global pollinator crisis. However, subgenus Psithyrus (cuckoo bumblebees), has been overlooked. species parasitise social are frequently viewed as being detrimental to their hosts. This lack attention, combined taxon’s relatively low abundances enhanced vulnerability climate change due its phenological dependence on , means there is an urgent challenge facing . We found that literature focused comprised less than 2% total works despite forming approximately 11% species. argue key roles in ecosystem potentially overlooked bioindicator diversity. present evidence suggesting close ties between hosts impacted by change. Going forward, research distributions phenology will be essential for conserving this subgenus. Additionally, addressing these areas provides broader opportunities improve our understanding dynamics under associated links services.

Space Use of Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) Revealed by Radio-Tracking

BACKGROUND Accurate estimates of movement behavior and distances travelled by animals are difficult to obtain, especially for small-bodied insects where transmitter weights have prevented the use of radio-tracking. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Here, we report the first successful use of micro radio telemetry to track flight distances and space use of bumblebees. Using ground surveys and Ces...

The bumblebees of North China (Apidae, Bombus Latreille).

Bumblebees are important pollinators for wild flowers and agricultural crops. North China is a region of varied geomorphology and vegetation, with plateaus, plains, mountains and deserts, and is part of the greatest hotspot of bumblebee diversity worldwide. We report on a field survey of the bumblebees of North China made between 2005-2012. A sample of 21,636 bumblebee specimens are assigned to...

Behavioural assessment of visual acuity in bumblebees (Bombus impatiens).

The present study used previously developed techniques to measure resolution acuity in bumblebees (Bombus impatiens). Bees were required to discriminate between horizontal and vertical gratings in a Y-maze apparatus. The gratings had a mean luminance of 9 cd m(-)(2) and a Michelson contrast of 84 %. For different bees, either the horizontal or vertical grating was rewarded. Rewarded gratings we...

Mechanosensory hairs in bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) detect weak electric fields.

Bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) use information from surrounding electric fields to make foraging decisions. Electroreception in air, a nonconductive medium, is a recently discovered sensory capacity of insects, yet the sensory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we investigate two putative electric field sensors: antennae and mechanosensory hairs. Examining their mechanical and neural response, we...

Spatio-temporal dynamics of bumblebee nest parasites (Bombus subgenus Psythirus ssp.) and their hosts (Bombus spp.).

1. A 39-year bumblebee data base was used to study the codistribution of six cuckoo bumblebees in the subgenus Psythirus of Bombus (hereafter called Psythirus) and their free-living bumblebee hosts in the British Isles. 2. A model of nest parasitism predicted host threshold densities and stable deterministic dynamics, with fluctuations only emerging as a result of environmental or demographic s...
